Racing ‘round the (Big) Durian

Fun, cooperation and, well, weird stuff, were all on display as AmCham’s Young Professional staged the sixth annual Amazing Big Durian Race

Have you ever imagined drying your hair with an air compressor? Or reenacting The Beatles’ classic Abbey Road album cover in the middle of rowdy Jakarta? These were just two of the many challenges in this year’s Amazing Big Durian Race.

Some 33 teams of three to four people each joined in the fun throughout Jakarta on May 28 for the sixth installment of the annual extravaganza organized by AmCham’s Young Professionals Committee. It is one of the most anticipated events on the AmCham calendar, not only for the younger set but for anyyone who digs our oddball city.

Equipped with their phones and Instagram accounts, the teams got creative to see who could complete over 100 photo and video tasks, with the glory going to the team that collected the most points during the four-hour race.

It all kicked off at Frank’s Bar & Smokehouse in Kemang, where the teams were briefed and planned out their strategies while enjoying the free-flow beer, soft drinks, and little bites. When the whistle was blown to officially start the race, the participants scattered to almost every corner of Jakarta.

“There was a great spirit this year,” said AmCham Executive Director Sarah Howe. “Everybody was cooperating and out to just enjoy themselves.”

After much frivolity, the participants made their way to the finish line at Amigos in Bellagio Mall before the 6 PM cut off time. The Mexican restaurant in Mega Kuningan was packed with tired yet elated participants eagerly awaiting the announcement of the winners, and, of course, the awarding of the big prizes. They satisfied their thirst and hunger after a long day with the taco buffet and free-flow beer.

The Amazing Big Durian Race 2016 trophy went to HMS MAXX as the overall winner, winning lots of vouchers and goodies from the sponsors in the process.

But, as the race’s main purpose is to have fun, it is safe to say that everyone was a winner as they cheered on and laughed at all the goofiness. Each of the participants also received a goodie bag with vouchers and prizes from the sponsors.

We hope to see you again at the 2017 race!
