Government Extends Public Activity Restrictions Until Feb 8

The Indonesian government has extended public activity restrictions (PPKM) in Java and Bali from Jan 25 until Feb 8. Foreigners are also banned from entering Indonesia until Feb 8, except for resident visa holders and ministerial level visits.

Shopping centers will now be allowed to operate until 8 pm, 75 percent of office workers must work from home, schools remain closed for in-person learning, and houses of worship can operate at 50 percent capacity; while restrictions on public transport vary depending on each region. Presidential Chief of Staff Moeldoko said PPKM can be prolonged beyond Feb 8 if necessary.

Prior to PPKM enforcement on Jan 1, the average daily increase of COVID-19 cases was 8,482; from Jan 11-Jan 20 during the PPKM cases escalated to an average of 11,192.

PPKM differs from PSBB as it focuses on restrictions for Java and Bali. PSBB focuses on a specific region, such as Jakarta, Bogor, Bandung, Makassar, Sumatera Barat, Banjarmasin, Tangerang, Pekanbaru and Tegal.

Government Studies Mechanism for Paid Vaccinations

President Joko Widodo says the government is studying the best mechanism for company-paid vaccinations to be allowed. A number of companies have requested permits to independently vaccinate their employees. The president is leaning toward agreeing with this notion, as it will be company-funded and accelerate Indonesia’s vaccination process.

Private Sector Can Participate in Vaccine Distribution: Erick

Erick Thohir, Minister of State-Owned Enterprises, said the private sector can also contribute to the vaccine distribution process in Indonesia. Because it is impossible for the Ministry of Health and Ministry of State-Owned Enterprises (BUMN) to monopolize the distribution of vaccines, the private sector must also distribute them, he said. Erick did not give details of the mechanism for private sector involvement but did say it would depend on vaccine availability.

COVID-19 Cases Projected to Peak in March/April

The Indonesian Medical Association (IDI) predicts the number of COVID-19 cases will peak in March or April. IDI also projects COVID-19 cases in Indonesia will reach one million within the next 10 days. This spike is mainly due to recent events, such as the year-end holiday and the 2020 local elections.

Economy to Recover in 2Q 2021: Sri Mulyani

Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati predicts the economy will start to recover in the second quarter of 2021, but COVID-19 will remain the main economic obstacle this year. Due to the pandemic, the 2020 state budget saw a deficit of Rp 883.7 trillion or 5.6 percent of Indonesia’s GDP.

She said the government will try to ensure 2021 state revenue will meet the target, but noted this highly depends on economic recovery, commodity prices, the global economy, and Indonesia’s exports.

We Still Need Your Support to Shelter the Front Line

AmCham Indonesia and Habitat for Humanity have joined forces in an initiative called Sheltering Those Who Care for Us, a program to provide temporary quarters in hotels for Indonesian medical workers during the COVID-19 pandemic. Our program has helped not only medical workers in Jakarta, but also Tangerang and Surabaya; we are now planning to expand to Sulawesi.

With the COVID-19 pandemic still spreading, medical workers are working a lot harder than before. In these difficult times, they often cannot go back home for fear of infecting family members or being rejected by their local communities. As a result, they are forced to sleep in hospitals without a proper bed, also increasing the possibility of getting infected.

By donating, we will increase the overall capability of Indonesia to treat COVID-19. Habitat will match individual hospitals with hotels on an as-needed basis.

Your support is needed more than ever.
