CEO for a Day Indonesia Empowers Young Women

Sixteen young women from across Indonesia came together with women CEOs, senior business leaders, government representatives and United Nations officials on Aug 12 for “CEO for a Day Indonesia: Women Shaping Tomorrow Leadership Forum,” marking the culmination of a mentorship program aimed at inspiring young women leaders.

Held at Sinarmas Land Plaza in Jakarta in conjunction with International Youth Day, the forum was jointly organized by the United Nations in Indonesia, AmCham Indonesia Women Network and UN Global Compact Network Indonesia (IGCN).

The Forum featured participant testimonials, a leadership discussion, a recognition ceremony and an interactive “Ask the Leaders” session. During the interactive session, participants met with senior women leaders in small groups, discussing career development, leadership challenges, mentorship and resilience.

Launched in June, CEO for a Day Indonesia was designed to give young women aged 18–25 first-hand exposure to leadership and decision-making while connecting their interests and contributions to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) with women leaders from the private sector and the United Nations.

Following a competitive selection process, 16 participants were paired with 15 women CEOs, senior executives and heads of UN agencies. Participants stepped into the day-to-day working environments of their mentors, joining meetings, observing decision-making and gaining a closer look at organizational culture and the responsibilities that come with leadership. The experience also provided space for candid conversations on career development.

Participating organizations represented a range of sectors and institutions, including AmCham Indonesia, AHANA, Bee Well Indonesia, HHP Law Firm, HP Indonesia, Dynapack Asia, Selaras Logistik Indonesia, Kiroyan Partners, APP Group, TBS Energi Utama, as well as the International Labour Organization (ILO), UNESCO, UNHCR, UN Women and the UN Resident Coordinator’s Office in Indonesia.

AmCham Indonesia Managing Director Donna Priadi, who participated in the initiative as a mentor, highlighted the value of allowing young women to experience leadership beyond the classroom and see how it is practiced in real working environments.

For AmCham, the initiative also demonstrated the role the business community can play in developing future talent and providing meaningful mentorship opportunities to young people.
